Battleship Potemkin Centenary

To celebrate this masterpiece we we are proud to announce there will also be an Introduction and Q&A with our renowned guest speakers Dr Daniel O’Brien (Lecturer, Film Studies, the University of Essex) and Dr Dusan Radunovic (Associate Professor, Russian and Film Studies, University of Durham)

Directed by Sergei Eisenstein, Battleship Potemkin is a silent Soviet epic dramatizing the 1905 naval mutiny aboard the battleship Potemkin. This special centenary screening pairs the original revolutionary visuals and iconic “Odessa Steps” sequence with a compelling contemporary soundtrack crafted by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe of Pet Shop Boys, orchestrated by Torsten Rasch and performed alongside the Dresdner Sinfoniker. The modern score fuses electronic beats with orchestral grandeur, offering a fresh, emotionally resonant experience while preserving the film’s powerful montage techniques.
