Neil Brand Presents His Silent Comedy Triple Bill (PG)

Neil Brand Presents His Silent Comedy Triple Bill

NEIL BRAND PRESENTS HIS SILENT COMEDY TRIPLE-BILL

The three greatest silent comedians come together for one awesome show presented by piano dynamo and much-loved broadcaster Neil Brand

Charlie Chaplin’s classic The Rink features the Tramp working as a waiter in a high-class restaurant and bunking off to the roller-skating rink in his spare time, where he gets involved with a beautiful skater and a philandering villain, culminating in the roller-chase of all time!

Buster Keaton’s The High Sign involves Buster looking for work on the beach boardwalk and unwittingly ending up as a paid assassin for a bunch of crooks. The final chase through the walls and floors of a two-storey house has to be seen to be believed!

Harold Lloyd’s Never Weaken sees our bespectacled hero clinging to a high building after attempting suicide on mistakenly believing his girlfriend loves another – high above Los Angeles, he must use his wits to dodge girders and cranes as he attempts to get back to her from a half-built skyscraper!

These comedy shorts represent the Golden Age of silent comedy and are a guaranteed laugh-maker for the whole family. Neil Brand presents and accompanies on the piano in his inimitable style.

“Brand's improvised piano playing elevates silent movies from crude slapstick to subtle ballet”

The Guardian

“Assisted by the trilling wit and polish of Brand's lightning-fingered accompaniment, the sheer finesse of each successive slapstick selection works its magic on the audience and the laughter flows more and more freely”

Daily Telegraph

Electro Jazz Orchestra

Electro Jazz Orchestra

“Combining elements of more traditional big band with more modern tracks and electronics, the Colchester based Electro Jazz Orchestra are bringing the concept of the 'Big Band' into the 21st Century, using ideas normally found in the pop world.”

The band formed in 2022, when Keith (conductor), Natalie (vocals) and Simon (drums) got talking about big bands.

As well as the traditional band, for arrangements that need more, technology is used to provide anything from strings to percussion (and even a lion roar in one arrangement - see

if you can spot that!) in a seamless mix of warm air and something called Ableton Live. This allows the band to manage all sorts of tracks, from all sorts of eras, all while maintaining a sounds and feel which suits all ages, and all ears.

This adaptation of Abbé Prévost’s novel embodies Kenneth MacMillan at his best, his acute insight into human psychology and his mastery of narrative choreography finding full

expression in the impassioned duets of the central couple, visceral and urgent in their desire.

The heroine’s struggle to escape poverty make Manon one of the most dramatic and devastating of ballets, emphasized by Nicholas Georgiadis’ evocative designs that reflect the

juxtaposition between Manon’s impoverished origins and the lavish world she longs to inhabit. The 2023/24 Season celebrates the centenary of Nicholas Georgiadis.

Danses Concertantes, commissioned by Ninette de Valois in 1955, was MacMillan’s first major work. An early sign of the incredible artistic output that would follow, the work’s critical

success spurred MacMillan to abandon performing in favour of choreography. It is followed by Different Drummer, MacMillan’s complex and haunting balletic interpretation of Woyzeck,

Georg Büchner's play about a soldier’s descent into madness. The mixed programme concludes with Requiem, his 1976 work for Stuttgart Ballet, created in memory of its late artistic director, MacMillan’s friend and former Royal Ballet dancer and choreographer John Cranko.
